Day 4 - August 19th 2021

 Howdy friends!

Today was our last day of camp and you all will certainly be missed!

Our campers got to practice communicating with their horse from the ground by leading today. Using the same clear voices and communication skills we practice while riding, each camper instructed the horse to stop, go, and maneuver around an area. Grace's group worked with Mocha, while Ashley's group worked with Rosie Pony, and Chloe's group worked with Tess. What did you find to be the most challenging aspect of groundwork?

Later we got to learn about all the different breeds, colors, and markings of horses. We put those skills to the test as we walked around the paddocks identifying the different horses in our herd. From stars to snips, to buckskin and dun we learned it all!

In our down time played ring toss, bean bags, freeze tag, and hung out in the shade to stay cool.

And finally for riding! We practiced precision steering during our games and worked at the different gates of the horse.

Thank you all for an absolutely incredible week. This camp was filled with tons of talented, intelligent, and kind hearted equestrians. We hope that you all have a great rest of your summer and that we see you again next year! We also want to remind camp families that if your child is not a current rider and would like to be part of our adaptive riding program, you will have priority on the wait list because they have attended camp. Let us know if you are interested!

Save your pictures from the blog today! Blog gets archived next Monday.

Day 3 - August 18th 2021

 Howdy folks!

Today we got to paint a real horse! Grace's group got to paint Rosie Pony, while Ashley and Chloe's group painted Sherman. After painting, we learned how to properly bathe a horse then put those skills to the test as we cleaned off our art work.

Later we made these awesome cards to send out to the sponsors of our favorite Little Bit horses.

After crafts and painting, everyone helped clean the stalls and paddocks, and learned more about the work that goes into caring for the herd. Though it may not be as exciting as riding, keeping our barn clean is crucial to the health and wellbeing of our hardworking horses!

In our riding lesson today we got to expand on our skills and practice some independent work through games! Everyone did a fantastic job.

As always, today was a blast. Thank you all for so much fun! I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow for our final day of camp.

Please email me at jdove@littlebit.org if you have any questions or concerns.

Remember to pack a lunch, snack, WATER, and proper clothing for your camper (tennis shoes or boots & pants comfortable for riding). Shorts are okay to wear when the campers are not riding. Make sure your campers have a comfortable mask to wear.

Sincerely,

Day 2 - August 17th 2021

 Hello camp families!

Super exciting day today! We started off our morning with a scavenger hunt where we explored the property looking for clues. We found all of them and at the end we got these adorable little wooden horse shoes to decorate! Each camper then picked their favorite horse so we could put a picture of them in these horse shoe frames we just made. They will get these back Thursday.

The favorite activity of the day (other than riding) was feeding the horses treats! We got to hide treats for Loki, Zorro, and Rosie Girl in the round pen and then the horses got to look for the treats! This mimics the foraging that they would do in the wild and makes them work for their food. We also talked a bit about the different types of feed, hay, and treats horses can have.

Next, the campers got to ride! All three groups worked hard today as we worked on our skills. Some of our campers even got to practice their independent riding skills and we continued to build of the foundations of riding such as steering, stopping, and walking on. Some campers even had the opportunity to practice 2-point and trotting!

Thanks for another fantastic day at camp! Please email me at jdove@littlebit.org if you have any questions or concerns. See you all tomorrow! We have some really exciting stuff planned, including painting and bathing!

Please remember to pack a lunch, snack, WATER, and proper clothing for your camper (tennis shoes or boots & pants comfortable for riding). Shorts are okay to wear when the campers are not riding. Make sure your campers have a comfortable mask to wear.

Sincerely,
